In breve

  • Water buffalo have few sweat glands and need water or mud to cool off.
  • They eat mostly forage and make good use of lower-quality grass.
  • They are more sensitive to heat than cattle; shade and water are essential.
  • They are calm creatures of habit; a steady care routine matters.
  • In Türkiye, like cattle, they must be ear-tagged and registered.

The water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is a large ruminant of Asian origin. In Türkiye it is kept especially in the Black Sea region, Thrace, around Istanbul and parts of Central Anatolia, and is known for the clotted cream (kaymak) and yoghurt made from its milk. Buffalo are usually docile and calm but may be wary of people they do not know.

Housing and space

  • Water or mud area: Because of their skin structure and small number of sweat glands, buffalo rely on wallowing in water or mud to regulate body temperature. If a lake, stream or safe mud wallow is not available, cooling methods such as showers or sprinklers should be used.
  • Shade: Open areas must have shade.
  • Shelter: In winter they need a dry, wind-protected barn with clean bedding.

Feeding routine

Buffalo eat grass, hay, straw and silage and use coarse, fibrous feed more efficiently than cattle. Concentrates and minerals can be added according to milk yield and growth. As with cattle, feed changes should be made slowly.

Water

Clean drinking water must always be available. Keeping the wallowing water clean and refreshed regularly is also important.

Daily care

  • Observe the animals every day for appetite, movement and behaviour.
  • Check hooves regularly.
  • For milking animals, pay attention to milking hygiene and regular milking times.

Behaviour and social needs

Buffalo are herd animals and attached to routine. Consistent milking and care times, and being looked after by the same people, help keep them calm.

Seasonal care

Buffalo suffer heat stress more easily than cattle; water, mud and shade are indispensable in summer. In winter they need protection from cold winds.

Like cattle, water buffalo must be ear-tagged and registered in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's registration system.
