The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile working breeds in the world. It serves in police work, search and rescue and as a guide dog, and at home it is deeply devoted to its family.
Character and temperament
Confident, alert and protective of its family. It can be reserved with strangers at first, so good socialisation from puppyhood and consistent, reward-based training are very important.
Exercise and mental needs
A high-energy, intelligent breed that needs not only walks but tasks that make it think. Obedience work, tracking, nose games and dog sports are ideal. A German Shepherd with too little to do can become restless.
Coat care
It has a dense double coat and sheds year-round, heavily at the change of seasons. Brushing a few times a week is needed.
Who is it suited to?
Suited to active owners who are keen on training and can give their dog regular time every day. First-time owners may benefit from professional training support.
A short history
It was standardised in Germany at the end of the 19th century to create a hard-working herding dog.
