The Yorkshire Terrier is one of the smallest breeds, yet it sees itself as a big dog. It is lively, curious and very attached to its owner.

Character and temperament

Brave, confident and playful. Its terrier heritage can make it determined and sometimes stubborn; short, fun and consistent training works best. It may bark in response to unfamiliar sounds.

Exercise and mental needs

Small but energetic, it needs daily walks and indoor play. Brain games and short training sessions keep it happy. Because of its size, take care when carrying it and when it jumps from heights.

Coat care

It has a long, silky coat similar to human hair and sheds little. A long coat should be brushed every day. Many owners prefer to keep it clipped short for easier care.

Who is it suited to?

Ideal for owners looking for a small but lively dog suited to apartment life who can make time for regular coat care. Supervision matters in homes with very young children.

A short history

Developed in the 19th century in the Yorkshire region of England to catch rats in mills and mines.
