The Birman (also known as the "sacred cat of Burma") is recognised by its semi-long silky coat, dark face and tail, and the white "gloves" on each paw.

Character and temperament

Calm, gentle and sociable. It is attached to its family and enjoys spending time with people without being overly demanding. It usually gets along well with children and other animals.

Exercise and mental needs

Moderately active; daily play and toys that provide mental stimulation are enough.

Coat care

Its semi-long, silky coat lacks a dense undercoat, so it tangles little. Brushing once or twice a week is usually enough.

Ideal for families looking for a balanced, affectionate long-haired cat whose coat is relatively easy to care for.

A short history

Although legends link the breed to Burma, today's Birman was largely developed in France in the early 20th century.
