The Golden Retriever is known for its balanced, biddable character. It is keen to learn and enjoys working with people, which is why it is often seen in therapy and assistance work.

Character and temperament

Affectionate, sociable and usually friendly with both people and other animals. It is more a companion than a guard dog. Goldens are sensitive and respond very well to reward-based training rather than harsh methods.

Exercise and mental needs

Because of its gun-dog heritage it needs both physical and mental activity. Daily walks, retrieving games, swimming and nose work are ideal. Young Goldens are especially lively.

Coat care

It has a medium-length, water-resistant double coat with feathering on the legs and tail. Brushing a few times a week prevents tangles; grooming increases during shedding periods.

Who is it suited to?

Suited to families who can make time for regular exercise and grooming and want their dog close by as part of the family. Goldens don't enjoy being left alone for long periods.

A short history

Developed in Scotland in the 19th century to create a dog that could retrieve game from both water and land.
