The Pomeranian is one of the smallest members of the spitz family. It is considered a small relative of the big sled dogs and stands out for its lively personality.

Character and temperament

Cheerful, curious and confident. Its alert nature makes it a good "alarm" dog and it can be prone to barking; rewarding calm behavior helps balance this. It is very attached to its family.

Exercise and mental needs

Short but regular walks and indoor play are usually enough. It is clever and enjoys learning tricks. Because of its small size, take care when it jumps from heights and when it is carried.

Coat care

It has a dense, fluffy double coat that needs brushing a few times a week. Grooming increases during seasonal shedding.

Who is it suited to?

Suited to owners looking for a small, lively dog that bonds closely with its person and who can make time for regular coat care. Supervision matters in homes with very young children.

A short history

It takes its name from the Pomerania region, today between Germany and Poland. It was bred down in size from larger spitz dogs and became especially popular in 19th-century England.
