The Dachshund (German for "badger dog") was bred to hunt badgers in their underground burrows. It comes in standard and miniature sizes and in smooth, long-haired and wire-haired varieties.
Character and temperament
Brave, curious and devoted to its family. Its hunting background means it can think independently and be stubborn, so patient, reward-based training is needed. It may act as an alert watchdog and bark. It loves to dig.
Exercise and mental needs
It needs regular walks and sniffing games. Because of its long back, limiting jumps from heights and frequent stair use, and using ramps for the sofa and bed, are commonly recommended. Keeping it at an ideal weight also helps protect its back.
Coat care
Smooth coats need little care; long coats need regular brushing, and wire coats need periodic hand-stripping.
