In breve
- Sleep increases and play sessions get shorter, but play and exploration still matter.
- The litter tray, food and bed should be easy to reach.
- Track weight and muscle loss with regular weighing.
- Veterinary check-ups are usually recommended more often.
- Note changes in behavior, appetite and coat.
Ferrets are considered seniors from about 4 years of age. Many are still curious and playful, but their energy decreases and their care needs change. The goal at this stage is to increase comfort and notice changes early.
What is happening in this stage?
- Sleep increases and play sessions get shorter.
- Activity and the urge to climb may decrease.
- Muscle mass may decrease and weight can fluctuate.
- Coat texture and shedding patterns may change.
What should you do differently?
- Access: A low-sided litter tray; food, water and bed on one level.
- Comfort: Warm, soft sleeping spots that are easy to get into; fewer high ramps.
- Play: Short but regular games; scent and exploration games keep the mind active.
- Diet: Talk to your veterinarian about changes in appetite or chewing.
What should you monitor?
- Weight and muscle loss (regular weighing)
- Appetite, drinking and droppings
- Energy levels and hind-leg strength
- Coat condition and hair loss
Expected behavior
Longer sleeps, calmer play and a preference for warm corners are natural parts of ageing. New lethargy or behavior changes should still be shared with your veterinarian.
Reminders
- Check-ups as often as your veterinarian recommends (usually more often)
- Monthly weighing, or more often
- Nail, ear and teeth checks
Le fasce d'età sono indicative; le differenze all'interno di una specie (come la taglia nei cani) possono anticipare o ritardare i passaggi.
