Goldfish are considered seniors from about 9 years of age; in good conditions they can live much longer. The goal at this stage is to adapt the aquarium to a slowing fish and notice changes early.

What is happening in this stage?

  • Activity and swimming speed may decrease.
  • Appetite may drop and catching food may slow down.
  • Colors may fade or change.
  • Resting time increases.

What should you do differently?

  • Current: Reduce strong currents and create calm areas for resting.
  • Diet: Feed small amounts slowly; make sure the whole group can eat and remove leftovers.
  • Water quality: Regular, small water changes; avoid sudden changes in temperature or water values.
  • Tank mates: Watch that faster, more active fish don't take an older fish's food.

What should you monitor?

  • Water values and temperature
  • Appetite and ability to catch food
  • Swimming balance and resting time
  • Scales, fins and eyes

Expected behavior

Slower swimming, longer rests and color changes can be natural parts of ageing. It helps to note any new change.

Reminders

  • Weekly partial water change and water test
  • Filter maintenance
  • Seasonal temperature checks

Le fasce d'età sono indicative; le differenze all'interno di una specie (come la taglia nei cani) possono anticipare o ritardare i passaggi.
