In breve
- Unlimited hay is the foundation of the diet, with measured pellets and a variety of fresh greens.
- The daily need for vitamin C must be met through the diet.
- A spacious home and daily exercise time matter.
- Long-haired breeds need regular combing, and nails need regular checks.
- Regular weighing helps you spot small changes early.
Adulthood runs from about 6 months to 4 years of age. Your guinea pig has reached adult size, and their personality, voice and habits become clear.
What is happening in this stage?
- Growth is complete and weight stabilizes.
- Relationships and hierarchy within the group settle.
- They respond strongly to daily routines (feeding time, sounds, the door opening).
What should you do differently?
- Diet: Unlimited hay, measured pellets, fresh vegetables and greens rich in vitamin C.
- Space: A spacious home with hides and floor time in a safe area.
- Enrichment: Hay piles, tunnels, hidden food.
- Grooming: Combing suited to the coat type and regular nail trims.
What should you monitor?
- Weight (weighing at home)
- Appetite, drinking and droppings
- Teeth and the area around the mouth (dropping food, drooling)
- Coat and skin condition, scratching
Expected behavior
Purr-like sounds when content, loud wheeking while waiting for food, brief scuffles within the group and plenty of chewing are all normal at this stage.
Reminders
- Check-ups yearly or as often as your veterinarian recommends
- Weighing every week or two
- Nail trims and coat care
Next stage
From about 4 years of age your guinea pig enters the senior stage.
Le fasce d'età sono indicative; le differenze all'interno di una specie (come la taglia nei cani) possono anticipare o ritardare i passaggi.
