The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a small but agile herding dog bred in Wales to drive cattle. Its low build let it nip at the cattle's heels and duck their kicks.

Character and temperament

Cheerful, intelligent, alert and devoted to its family. Its herding heritage can lead it to try to "gather" running children or animals and to nip gently at heels. It is a vocal breed and responds very well to positive training.

Exercise and mental needs

More energetic than its size suggests, it needs daily walks, games and mental activity. Because of its long back and short legs, keeping it at an ideal weight and limiting jumps from heights are commonly recommended.

Coat care

Its dense double coat sheds a lot; brushing a few times a week, and more often during shedding periods, is needed.

Who is it suited to?

Suited to active families who can make time for play and training and are prepared for shedding. With enough exercise, it can adapt to apartment life.

A short history

It developed as a herding dog in the Pembrokeshire region of Wales. It is also well known for its association with the British royal family.
