The Pug is an ancient breed kept purely for companionship for centuries. It is much loved for its small but sturdy build and comical expressions.
Character and temperament
Affectionate, sociable and playful. It loves being among people and at the centre of attention. It usually gets along well with children and other animals. Pugs love food, so it's important to count treats as part of the daily ration.
Exercise and mental needs
Exercise needs are low to moderate: short, regular walks and indoor play are enough. As a flat-faced breed, avoiding exercise in hot, humid weather and providing a cool environment is very important.
Coat care
Despite the short coat, Pugs shed quite a lot; brushing a few times a week helps. Regularly cleaning and drying the facial folds is an important part of grooming.
Who is it suited to?
Suited to people and families with a calm pace who can keep their dog company during the day.
A short history
The breed's origins go back thousands of years in China; it later spread across Europe via the Netherlands and England.
