The Maine Coon is one of the largest domestic cat breeds. It is known for a thick coat adapted to cold climates, a bushy tail and tufts at the tips of its ears.

Character and temperament

Friendly, sociable, playful and curious. It likes to follow its family around the house and make chirping, "chatty" sounds. It usually gets along well with children and other animals. Some are interested in water.

Exercise and mental needs

Playful and clever, it enjoys fetch games, food puzzles and climbing spaces. Its large size calls for sturdy, spacious cat trees and big litter boxes. It is a slow-maturing breed and can take a few years to reach full adult size.

Coat care

It has a semi-long, water-resistant, layered coat. Brushing once or twice a week is usually enough, with more care during shedding periods.

Who is it suited to?

Ideal for families looking for a sociable, playful cat that interacts with its people. Enough space and equipment should be provided for its size.

A short history

It developed naturally in the US state of Maine from farm cats adapted to the harsh climate.
