Em resumo

  • Growth is fast; puppies need a food made for them and regular meals.
  • The socialisation window is open; new experiences should be short and positive.
  • Toilet training, their name and a recall are among the first priorities.
  • Create a preventive care plan (vaccinations, parasite protection, microchip) with your vet.
  • Track weight gain with regular weighing.

Puppyhood runs from birth to about 6 months and is a time of rapid growth and intense learning. Growth rates differ by breed and size: small breeds reach adult size earlier, large and giant breeds later.

What is happening in this stage?

  • The body grows quickly; bones and joints are still developing.
  • Baby teeth fall out and adult teeth come through; the need to chew rises sharply.
  • The puppy learns about the world: sounds, people, other animals and places are recorded as "normal".
  • Bladder control is still developing; frequent toilet needs are normal.

What should you do differently?

  • Feeding: Choose a "complete and balanced" food made for puppies; there are also foods developed for large-breed puppies. Split the daily amount into several meals.
  • Exercise: Short, frequent, play-based activity. Exploration and sniffing rather than long runs and jumping from heights.
  • Training: Short, fun sessions: toilet training, name, "come", "sit".
  • Socialisation: Plan safe, positive introductions.
  • Rest: Puppies sleep for most of the day; a quiet resting area is very important.

What should you monitor?

  • Weight gain and body condition (regular weighing)
  • Appetite and toilet routine
  • What gets chewed during teething (provide safe chew toys)
  • Situations that trigger fear or strong reactions

Expected behavior

Exploring with the mouth and play biting, sudden bursts of energy, short attention spans and lots of sleep are all natural parts of this stage. Redirecting play biting to toys and guiding a tired puppy to rest both help.

Reminders

  • Vet check-ups and the preventive care schedule (as set by your veterinarian)
  • Microchip and ID registration
  • Weekly weighing
  • Getting used to nail, ear and teeth checks

The next stage

From around 6 months your dog enters adolescence. The transition can come earlier or later depending on breed.

Os intervalos de idade são aproximados; as diferenças dentro de uma espécie (como o tamanho nos cães) podem antecipar ou atrasar as transições.
