In het kort
- Ferrets sleep for much of the day but need long play time every day.
- They are social, and many enjoy living with another ferret.
- They need a ferret-appropriate diet based on animal protein.
- Nail, ear and teeth checks are part of regular care.
- Home safety stays important at this stage.
Adulthood runs from about 1 to 4 years of age. Your ferret has reached adult size and their personality and habits are settled.
What is happening in this stage?
- Growth is complete; weight may fluctuate with the seasons.
- The urge to play continues but is more balanced than in youth.
- The coat sheds and renews seasonally.
What should you do differently?
- Play: Long, supervised play and exploration time every day; tunnels, balls, a dig box.
- Diet: A ferret-appropriate diet based on animal protein; avoid sugary and plant-heavy treats.
- Grooming: Regular nail trims, ear checks and brushing during shedding.
- Safety: Review possible hazards in the home regularly.
What should you monitor?
- Weight (weighing at home)
- Appetite, drinking and droppings
- Coat condition and any unusual hair loss
- Energy levels and interest in play
Expected behavior
Long sleeps followed by intense play sessions, stashing objects, squeezing into tight spaces and their own distinctive scent are ordinary parts of this stage.
Reminders
- Check-ups yearly or as often as your veterinarian recommends
- Monthly weighing
- Nail and ear care
Next stage
From about 4 years of age your ferret enters the senior stage.
De leeftijdsgrenzen zijn bij benadering; verschillen binnen een soort (zoals grootte bij honden) kunnen de overgangen vervroegen of vertragen.
