The juvenile stage runs from birth to about 3 months. Hamsters usually arrive in their new home after weaning, then grow quickly and learn about their surroundings.
What is happening in this stage?
- Growth is fast and weight gain is steady.
- They learn their surroundings, sounds and smells; trust is shaped now.
- Digging, nest-building and food-hoarding behaviors become clear.
- Sexual maturity comes early; for Syrian hamsters, living alone becomes essential.
What should you do differently?
- Habitat: A setup with plenty of floor space, deep bedding and a suitable wheel.
- First days: Put the enclosure in a quiet room and only refresh food and water for the first few days.
- Taming: Rest your hand in the enclosure and let them sniff; offer food and wait for them to climb on. Sit close to the floor when holding them.
- Diet: A suitable hamster mix or pellet, small amounts of suitable fresh vegetables and clean water.
What should you monitor?
- Weight (weekly weighing)
- Appetite, drinking and droppings
- Cleanliness of the rear end
- Wheel use and general activity
Expected behavior
Busy activity in the evening and at night, carrying food in their cheek pouches, frequently rearranging the nest and freezing when startled are normal at this stage.
