The adult hamster stage
Between 3 and 18 months, hamsters are at their most active and exploratory. A rich habitat, respect for their night-time rhythm and regular weighing make this stage a happy one.

Коротко
- Energy is high; plenty of floor space and a properly sized wheel are essential.
- Build a setup that meets their need to dig, hide and forage.
- Hamsters are nocturnal; plan interaction for the evening.
- Their teeth grow constantly; provide safe chewing materials.
- Monthly weighing makes it easier to notice small changes.
Adulthood runs from about 3 to 18 months of age. Your hamster has reached adult size and is living their most active, most curious period.
What is happening in this stage?
- Growth is complete and weight stabilizes.
- They run long distances, dig and forage through the night.
- Personality becomes clear; some hamsters are more open to handling than others.
What should you do differently?
- Space: A large habitat with deep bedding and plenty of hides.
- Enrichment: Hide food in the bedding; add tunnels, cardboard and digging areas.
- Diet: Measured hamster food and small amounts of suitable fresh vegetables; avoid sugary treats.
- Interaction: Short, calm sessions in the evening when they are awake.
What should you monitor?
- Weight (weighing at home)
- Teeth (overgrowth or difficulty eating)
- Coat and skin condition
- Appetite, drinking and wheel use
Expected behavior
Running on the wheel through the night, carrying food in their cheek pouches, hoarding food in the nest and chewing the bars (often a sign of boredom; enrich the space) are all seen at this stage.
Reminders
- Check-ups as often as your veterinarian recommends
- Monthly weighing
- Spot cleaning and checking the food hoard (remove fresh food that spoils)
Next stage
From about 18 months your hamster enters the senior stage.
Возрастные границы приблизительны; различия внутри вида (например, размер у собак) могут сдвигать переходы раньше или позже.
