The young rabbit stage
In their first months rabbits grow fast, explore everything and lay the foundation of their relationship with people. A hay-first diet and calm introductions are the priorities of this stage.

The juvenile stage runs from birth to about 6 months of age and is a time of rapid growth, busy exploring and learning. Growth speed varies by breed: small breeds reach adult size sooner.
What is happening in this stage?
- The body grows quickly and the digestive system is adapting to new foods.
- Teeth grow throughout life, so the need to chew starts early.
- Your rabbit is learning about surroundings, sounds and people; trust is shaped now.
- Bursts of energy and sudden leaps ("binkies") are common.
What should you do differently?
- Diet: Make hay the foundation of the diet; add pellets and greens slowly, one at a time.
- Introductions: Instead of lifting your rabbit, sit on the floor and let them come to you.
- Space: Daily time out in a rabbit-proofed area with cables protected.
- Chewing: Offer safe wooden toys and suitable materials such as cardboard.

- Weight gain (regular weighing)
- Appetite and droppings (amount and shape)
- How they cope after a new food is introduced
- Fear responses and hiding
Expected behavior
Short bursts of activity followed by long rests, more energy in the morning and evening, and the urge to sniff and chew everything are natural parts of this stage.
