The Australian Shepherd ("Aussie") is a versatile working dog bred for herding livestock. It stands out for its colourful coat and, often, eyes of different colours.

Character and temperament

Intelligent, loyal and devoted to its family. It can be reserved with strangers at first. Its herding instinct may lead it to try to gather moving people and animals. Early socialisation and consistent training are important.

Exercise and mental needs

It has very high energy and a strong need for mental work. Besides long daily activity, mentally tiring pursuits such as agility, frisbee, obedience and scent work are essential. Without enough to do, it may get bored and develop unwanted behaviors.

Coat care

It has a medium-length, water-resistant double coat. Brushing a few times a week is needed, more during seasonal shedding.

Who is it suited to?

Ideal for very active owners interested in dog sports who can give their dog a lot of time every day. Not suited to a sedentary lifestyle.

A short history

Despite its name, the breed developed largely on ranches in the western United States; its ancestors are thought to have arrived there alongside sheep that came via Australia.
