Berger de Kangal

The silent guardian of the Anatolian steppe, the Kangal is a calm, independent livestock guardian deeply devoted to its family. Its strong instincts call for experience and plenty of space.

The Kangal Shepherd Dog takes its name from the Kangal district of Sivas province in Türkiye, and for centuries it has protected flocks of sheep from wolves and other predators. It is regarded as one of Türkiye's national dog breeds.

Character and temperament

Calm, balanced and self-assured. As a livestock guardian it was bred to make its own decisions, so it thinks independently and may not respond instantly to every cue. It is very protective of its family and its "flock", and wary of strangers.

Exercise and mental needs

It isn't a dog that runs constantly, but it needs to roam a large area, watch its surroundings and patrol. Regular walks and a safe, well-fenced garden are ideal. It is not suited to apartment life.

Coat care

It has a short-to-medium, dense double coat. Weekly brushing is enough, with more care during seasonal shedding.

Who is it suited to?

Suited to owners experienced with large guardian breeds who have a large, secure space and can invest time in early socialisation and consistent training. Positive experiences with people, children and other animals from puppyhood are very important.

A short history

It has been bred for generations by shepherds in Anatolia to protect their flocks. In some countries it is also referred to as the "Anatolian Shepherd Dog"; how the two names are classified differs between kennel clubs.
