The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel descends from the small spaniels loved at the English court. Today it is chosen as a family dog around the world for its affectionate character and adaptability.

Character and temperament

Gentle, affectionate and very attached to its people. It usually gets along well with children, other dogs and cats. It doesn't like being left alone and wants to be with its family.

Exercise and mental needs

It needs moderate exercise: daily walks and play keep it happy. Because of its spaniel heritage it may chase birds and small animals, so keeping it on lead in unsafe areas is recommended.

Coat care

It has a medium-length, silky coat and feathered ears. Brushing a few times a week prevents tangles, and regular ear checks are part of grooming.

Who is it suited to?

A suitable breed for families with a calm but active pace, older people and first-time owners, as long as the dog isn't left alone for long periods during the day.

A short history

It takes its name from the toy spaniels loved by King Charles II in 17th-century England. The modern breed was redeveloped in the 20th century.
