The English Cocker Spaniel was bred as a gun dog that flushes birds from cover. Today it is much loved as an affectionate, energetic and adaptable family dog.
Character and temperament
Merry, affectionate and devoted to its people, with a temperament positive enough to earn the nickname "the merry cocker". It is sensitive and responds very well to positive, reward-based training.
Exercise and mental needs
Energetic, it needs daily walks, sniffing opportunities and retrieving games. Its hunting instinct can make it follow its nose, so recall training matters.
Coat care
It has a silky, medium-length coat with feathered ears and legs. It needs brushing a few times a week and periodic trimming. Regularly checking and cleaning the long ears is an important part of grooming.
Who is it suited to?
Suited to active families who enjoy walks with their dog and can make time for regular coat care.
A short history
Developed in England from spaniels used especially for hunting woodcock, from which it takes its name.
