In het kort

  • Kittens grow quickly and need a food made for kittens.
  • Positive human contact and safe experiences in the early weeks are very valuable.
  • Litter box, scratching post and play habits settle in this stage.
  • Plan preventive care and neutering timing with your veterinarian.
  • Now is the best time to get used to the carrier and to being handled.

In cats, the kitten stage runs from birth to about 1 year. In the first months, kittens are especially open to people, sounds and other animals, and these experiences strongly influence how confident they will be as adults.

What is happening in this stage?

  • Fast growth and high energy
  • Hunting behavior developing through play (stalking, pouncing, catching)
  • Baby teeth being replaced by adult teeth
  • Social skills and a sense of security developing

What should you do differently?

What should you monitor?

  • Weight gain (weekly weighing)
  • Appetite, litter box use and droppings
  • How intense biting and scratching are during play

Expected behavior

Sudden sprints, knocking things off tables, ambushing feet and long naps are all natural parts of this stage. Meeting their energy with play prevents most unwanted behavior.

Reminders

  • Vet check-ups and the preventive care schedule
  • Discussing neutering timing
  • Microchip registration
  • Weekly weighing

The next stage

From 1 year your cat moves into young adulthood.

De leeftijdsgrenzen zijn bij benadering; verschillen binnen een soort (zoals grootte bij honden) kunnen de overgangen vervroegen of vertragen.
