The Norwegian Forest Cat is a large, strong breed adapted to the harsh northern climate. It stands out for its water-resistant double coat, full ruff and bushy tail.
Character and temperament
Friendly, calm and independent. It is attached to its family but prefers to be near them rather than always on a lap. It usually gets along well with children and other animals.
Exercise and mental needs
A skilled climber, it is very happy with tall, sturdy cat trees, shelves and window perches. It needs daily play and time to explore.
Coat care
It has a long, layered, water-resistant coat. Brushing once or twice a week is usually enough, but it sheds heavily in spring, when more frequent brushing is needed.
Who is it suited to?
Ideal for families who can provide plenty of vertical space and want an independent yet affectionate cat.
A short history
A natural breed that has lived in Scandinavia for centuries and features in Norwegian folklore. It was officially recognised as a breed in the 20th century.
