Kurz gesagt
- Growth is fast; unlimited hay and a quality guinea pig pellet are the base diet.
- Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, so their diet has to provide it.
- They are social and should live with at least one compatible guinea pig.
- Short, calm handling close to the floor builds trust.
- Introduce new foods slowly, one at a time.
The juvenile stage runs from birth to about 6 months. Guinea pig babies are born with fur and open eyes, start eating solid food very early and grow quickly.
What is happening in this stage?
- Weight gain is fast and the digestive system is adapting to new foods.
- Teeth grow throughout life, so chewing starts early.
- They learn about sounds, people and their surroundings; trust is shaped now.
- Joyful jumps on the spot ("popcorning") are common.
What should you do differently?
- Diet: Unlimited hay, guinea pig pellets and fresh greens rich in vitamin C; make changes slowly.
- Companionship: Guinea pigs should not live alone; plan for a compatible companion.
- Housing: A spacious, single-level home with hides.
- Handling: Hold them low to the ground and briefly, with two hands supporting the body, rather than lifting them high.
What should you monitor?
- Weight gain (weekly weighing)
- Appetite and droppings
- How they get on with their companion
- Fear responses and hiding
Expected behavior
Frequent squeaking ("wheeking", especially when waiting for food), popcorning, preferring hides and freezing when startled are normal at this stage.
Reminders
- First veterinary check-up (with a guinea pig-experienced vet)
- Weekly weighing
- Daily cleaning and fresh hay
Next stage
From about 6 months your guinea pig enters the adult stage.
Die Altersspannen sind Näherungswerte; Unterschiede innerhalb einer Art (etwa die Größe bei Hunden) können die Übergänge verschieben.
