Âge approximatif: 3 ans et plus

The senior betta stage

Bettas can show signs of ageing from about 3 years of age. A calmer aquarium, resting spots near the surface, easy-to-reach food and stable water quality make this stage more comfortable.

En bref

  • Activity may decrease and bettas rest more.
  • Resting leaves near the surface and a lower water level can make reaching the surface easier.
  • Colors may fade and fins may thin.
  • Reduce the current and avoid conditions that make swimming harder.
  • Water quality matters even more at this stage.

Bettas are considered seniors from about 3 years of age; in good conditions they can live several more years. The goal is to adapt the aquarium to a slowing fish and notice changes early.

What is happening in this stage?

  • Activity and swimming time may decrease.
  • Colors may fade, and fin edges may thin or curl.
  • Appetite may drop and catching food may get harder.
  • Rest and sleep increase.

What should you do differently?

  • Resting spots: Add resting leaves and plants near the surface.
  • Current: Turn down the filter flow; strong currents tire older bettas.
  • Diet: Feed slowly and in small amounts; watch whether they manage to eat and remove leftovers.
  • Water quality: Regular, small partial water changes; avoid sudden temperature changes.

What should you monitor?

  • Water values and temperature
  • Appetite and ability to catch food
  • Swimming balance and resting time
  • Body, scales and fins

Expected behavior

Longer rests, slower swimming and fewer bubble nests are natural parts of ageing.

Reminders

  • Weekly partial water change and water test
  • Daily temperature check
  • Filter maintenance

Les tranches d'âge sont approximatives ; les différences au sein d'une espèce (comme la taille chez le chien) peuvent avancer ou retarder les transitions.
