En bref

  • Growth is fast; juveniles eat more often than adults.
  • Leopard geckos benefit from belly heat; they need a warm–cool gradient and hides.
  • A humid hide makes shedding easier.
  • Insects should be appropriately sized; set the supplement routine with a vet.
  • They can drop their tail when threatened; never hold them by the tail.

The juvenile stage runs from hatching to about 10 months of age. Leopard geckos grow quickly, shed often and slowly get used to handling. Juveniles usually have banded patterns that turn into spots with age.

What is happening in this stage?

  • Growth and shedding are fast.
  • The pattern starts changing from bands to spots.
  • They are very skittish; trust develops over time.

What should you do differently?

  • Heat: A warm side and a cool side, with a heat source on a thermostat; read up on heat and lighting.
  • Hides: One at the warm end, one at the cool end, and a humid hide.
  • Diet: Appropriately sized insects, more often than for adults. Set the supplement dusting routine with a reptile-experienced veterinarian.
  • Handling: Very little in the first weeks; then short, low to the ground and supported from below. Never hold them by the tail.

What should you monitor?

  • Weight (regular weighing)
  • Tail thickness (one sign of condition)
  • Complete sheds (toes and tail tip)
  • Appetite and droppings

Expected behavior

Hiding during the day, becoming active in the evening and at night, twitching the tail tip when they spot prey and eating their shed skin afterwards are normal at this stage.

Reminders

  • First veterinary check-up (with a reptile-experienced vet)
  • Keeping the humid hide moist
  • Regular weighing

Next stage

From about 10 months of age your leopard gecko enters the adult stage.

Les tranches d'âge sont approximatives ; les différences au sein d'une espèce (comme la taille chez le chien) peuvent avancer ou retarder les transitions.
