En bref
- Goldfish grow fast; plan the aquarium for their adult size.
- Bowls and small containers are not suitable; they need a large tank with strong filtration.
- They produce a lot of waste, so water quality needs close attention.
- They are social and can be kept with compatible goldfish.
- Feeding small amounts often helps protect water quality.
The juvenile stage runs from hatching to about 1 year of age. Goldfish grow quickly; many juveniles are dark at first and develop their colors over time.
What is happening in this stage?
- Growth is fast, with a clear increase in size in the first year.
- Colors may change and intensify.
- They are active and curious, constantly sifting the substrate for food.
What should you do differently?
- Aquarium: A large tank with strong filtration suited to adult size, fully cycled before fish are added.
- Diet: Small goldfish food, a little at a time several times a day.
- Setting: Rounded substrate and sturdy decor; fancy goldfish in particular have delicate eyes and fins.
- Tank mates: Keep them with goldfish that have similar needs, not with tropical fish.
What should you monitor?
- Water values (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate)
- Appetite and swimming
- Growth and whether the tank is still big enough
- Fin and scale condition
Expected behavior
Constantly sifting the substrate, coming to the surface when expecting food, cruising as a group and color changes are normal at this stage.
Reminders
- Weekly partial water change and water test
- Filter maintenance (rinse filter media in tank water)
- Tank planning as they grow
Next stage
From about 1 year of age your goldfish enters the adult stage.
Les tranches d'âge sont approximatives ; les différences au sein d'une espèce (comme la taille chez le chien) peuvent avancer ou retarder les transitions.
