En bref

  • Maintaining ideal weight is the main priority; weight gain is common in indoor cats.
  • Daily play and enrichment support both body and mind.
  • Separate, plentiful resources (food, water, litter, scratching, rest) reduce stress.
  • Arrangements that encourage drinking are helpful.
  • Keep up yearly check-ups and a dental care routine.

In cats, young adulthood covers roughly the ages of 1 to 6. Growth is complete, character has settled, and most cats live their most active years now.

What is happening in this stage?

  • Energy is high but more balanced than in kittenhood.
  • Neutered and indoor cats may need less energy, and a tendency to gain weight can begin.
  • Habits and preferences become clear.

What should you do differently?

  • Feeding: A "complete and balanced" adult cat food; adjust portions to body condition. Giving part of the food through play and puzzles increases both activity and satisfaction.
  • Water: Several water bowls, placed away from food, and for some cats a water fountain can encourage drinking.
  • Home setup: Vertical spaces, hiding places and well-set-up litter boxes.
  • Grooming: Weekly brushing, nail checks and getting used to dental care.

What should you monitor?

  • Weight and body condition (monthly weighing)
  • Drinking and litter box habits
  • Willingness to play and general activity
  • Relationships with other pets and signs of stress

Expected behavior

More activity at dawn and dusk, short and intense play, and long naps are typical of this stage.

Reminders

  • Yearly vet check-up and preventive care
  • Monthly weighing
  • A dental care routine

The next stage

From about 7 years your cat moves into the mature adult stage.

Les tranches d'âge sont approximatives ; les différences au sein d'une espèce (comme la taille chez le chien) peuvent avancer ou retarder les transitions.
