The Dobermann is a working breed developed in Germany in the late 19th century. Behind its powerful build is a sensitive, family-oriented and very intelligent dog.

Character and temperament

Alert, confident and closely bonded to its owner. It is affectionate with its family and can be wary of strangers. It is a sensitive breed; consistent, reward-based training works far better than harsh methods. Early, thorough socialisation is important.

Exercise and mental needs

High-energy and athletic, it needs brisk daily walks, running and play. Mental activities such as obedience work and dog sports are also very valuable for it.

Coat care

The short, dense, glossy coat needs little care; weekly brushing is enough. Because the coat is thin, it can feel the cold.

Who is it suited to?

Suited to active owners who are keen on training and want a close relationship with their dog. Dobermanns don't like being left alone for long. Some countries and cities have specific rules for this breed; check in advance.

A short history

It takes its name from Louis Dobermann, the German tax collector thought to have developed the breed.
