The Jack Russell Terrier is an agile, hardy dog bred to accompany fox hunts. Its compact size can be misleading; its energy and determination rival those of big dogs.

Character and temperament

Brave, curious, intelligent and determined. It has a strong prey drive and is prone to chasing small animals. It likes to bark and dig. When bored it tries to create its own entertainment, so it needs plenty to do.

Exercise and mental needs

Very high energy: long daily walks, games and mental activities are essential. Agility, ball games and scent work are ideal. It may escape from poorly fenced gardens or dig tunnels.

Coat care

It comes in smooth and rough/broken coats. Weekly brushing is usually enough; rough coats may need periodic hand-stripping.

Who is it suited to?

Suited to energetic owners who enjoy being active with their dog every day and can manage a terrier character patiently. Take care in homes with small pets.

A short history

It takes its name from the fox terriers developed in 19th-century England by a clergyman, Reverend John Russell.
