The 1–5 scales are PetBondly editorial estimates based on breed-club descriptions and general references; every individual is different.

The Abyssinian is recognised by its "ticked" coat, in which each hair carries several bands of colour. This pattern gives it a warm, shimmering look.

Character and temperament

Very active, curious and intelligent. Rather than sitting on a lap for long, it prefers to join in with everything happening at home. It is attached to its people and enjoys interaction.

Exercise and mental needs

High-energy: tall climbing spaces, shelves, wand toys and food puzzles are essential. It loves mental activity and can learn simple tricks.

Coat care

The short, dense coat needs little care; weekly brushing is enough.

Who is it suited to?

Ideal for active owners who can make time to play every day and enrich the home with vertical spaces. Not suited to people looking for a calm lap cat.

A short history

It takes its name from Abyssinia (today's Ethiopia), where the first cats are thought to have been brought from in the 19th century; the breed was largely developed in England. Its exact origin is still debated.
