The Turkish Angora (known in Türkiye as the Ankara cat) is a natural breed that has lived in Anatolia for centuries. Its best-known examples are white, often with eyes of different colours (heterochromia), but it comes in many colours.
Character and temperament
Intelligent, curious, playful and devoted to its people. It loves joining in with everything happening at home, climbing high and playing. It has plenty of personality and often bonds especially closely with one person in the family.
Exercise and mental needs
Active and agile, it needs climbing spaces, wand toys and brain games. Daily play time is important so it doesn't get bored.
Coat care
Its semi-long, silky coat lacks a dense undercoat, so it tangles relatively little. Brushing once or twice a week is usually enough.
Who is it suited to?
Ideal for families looking for an active, interactive cat and who can make time to play with it.
A short history
It takes its name from Ankara. Conservation and breeding work to protect the breed has been carried out in Türkiye for many years; the programme at Ankara Zoo is the best known.
