The Chihuahua takes its name from the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. It comes in smooth-coated and long-coated varieties. Its small size suits city life, but its personality is anything but small.

Character and temperament

Very attached to its owner, it often bonds especially closely with one person in the family. Brave and alert, it can be wary of strangers and prone to barking. Positive socialisation from puppyhood helps it grow into a confident, calm adult.

Exercise and mental needs

Short daily walks and play are enough. It is an intelligent breed that enjoys short training sessions and brain games. Its tiny body can feel the cold easily; a coat can help in cold weather. Take care with jumps from heights and falls.

Coat care

Smooth coats stay tidy with weekly brushing, long coats with brushing a few times a week.

Who is it suited to?

Suited to adults with a small living space who want a close bond with their dog. In homes with young children, remember that the dog can be injured easily.

A short history

The breed originates in Mexico and is associated with ancient small dogs that lived there; it was introduced to the wider world in the late 19th century.
