The Shih Tzu is an ancient breed developed purely for companionship. Its name is usually translated as "little lion". It is known for adapting well to calm home life and for its love of people.

Character and temperament

Friendly, cheerful and devoted to its family. It is usually easy-going with people and other animals. It can be stubborn at times; patient, reward-based training works best.

Exercise and mental needs

Exercise needs are low to moderate. Short daily walks and indoor play are enough. As a flat-faced breed, it's important to limit exercise in hot weather.

Coat care

Its long double coat sheds little but needs a lot of care. A long coat should be brushed every day; many owners keep it in a short "puppy clip" for easier care. Hair falling into the eyes needs to be tied up or trimmed.

A short history

It descends from small dogs of Tibetan origin and was developed in China, especially in the imperial palaces.
