The Beagle is a scent hound bred to hunt in packs. That heritage explains both its sociable, easy-going character and its passion for following its nose.
Character and temperament
Friendly, playful and generally good with people and other dogs. Once it picks up a scent it can forget everything else, so recall training takes time. It is a vocal breed and can make howling, baying sounds.
Exercise and mental needs
Energetic, it needs walks with plenty of sniffing opportunities. Scent games and food puzzles are great activities for a Beagle. Any area where it runs off-lead should be securely fenced.
Coat care
The coat is short and dense; weekly brushing is enough. It sheds seasonally. Regularly checking its floppy ears is part of grooming.
Who is it suited to?
Suited to energetic, patient families who enjoy exploring walks with their dog. Beagles dislike being alone and can be opportunistic about food, so take care in the kitchen.
A short history
Developed in England as small scent hounds working in packs to hunt hare.
