The English Bulldog is instantly recognisable by its wrinkled face, broad chest and distinctive gait. Today it is entirely a family and companion dog.

Character and temperament

Calm, gentle and devoted to its family. It is usually patient with children. It can like to make its own decisions, so training takes patience and plenty of rewards.

Exercise and mental needs

Exercise needs are low to moderate. Short, regular walks are enough. As a flat-faced breed, it's important to keep exercise to a minimum in hot, humid weather and to provide cool, shady places.

Coat care

The short coat stays tidy with weekly brushing. The folds around the face and tail need regular cleaning and drying.

Who is it suited to?

Suited to owners with a calm lifestyle who don't expect an athletic dog and can make time for a regular grooming routine.

A short history

The breed originates in England. In the past it was used in animal-fighting sports that are unacceptable today; after these were banned, the breed was transformed into a calm companion dog.
