The 1–5 scales are PetBondly editorial estimates based on breed-club descriptions and general references; every individual is different.
The Poodle is counted among the most intelligent dog breeds. Thanks to its curly coat and range of sizes, it can adapt to very different lifestyles.
Character and temperament
Cheerful, devoted to its family and attentive. It loves learning; new tricks, dog sports and brain games are enjoyable activities for it. Poodles are sensitive and respond very well to positive training.
Exercise and mental needs
Standard Poodles in particular are quite athletic: they love swimming, running and retrieving. Miniature and toy sizes also need regular walks and plenty of mental activity.
Coat care
The coat is dense, curly and keeps growing; it sheds little but needs regular care. Frequent brushing prevents matting, and a professional clip every few weeks is usually needed.
Who is it suited to?
Ideal for owners who enjoy training and can set aside time and budget for coat care. Thanks to the size options, it can suit both large homes and apartment living.
A short history
The breed descends from a water-retrieving dog; its name comes from a German word meaning "to splash in water". It became much loved and was developed further in France.
